You might be wondering, “Where in the hell is Nick and why isn’t he writing anymore?” Or maybe you weren’t. Maybe you just clicked on a link to this website and now you’re like, “OK I thought this was going to be a fun game of Where in the World is Nicholas Blakeslee, but now I feel a little ripped off.” I get that. And I’m sorry for getting your hopes up.
Regardless, I’m here to tell you where I’ve been and why I haven’t been posting stories here.
Writing is something I always do. Even when I’m not on here posting stories, I’m still writing. My 1 gigabyte of free online storage is starting to fill up, if you can believe it. Currently, I have 726 documents sitting in my folder. Most of them are false start pieces, things that will never see the light of day (hopefully), but there are some that I’m quite fond of.
So fond, that I’ve been submitting stories to online publications and competitions. Places that give out publishing privileges and a nice check as rewards. Competitions that have people like David Sedaris and Bill Bryson and Haruki Murakami as guest judges. It would be be nice to next say, “And check out this trophy case I’ve been filling!” And provide a screen shot of my bank account with a bunch of Zeros that are on the left side of the decimal instead of the right.
Like I said, it’d be nice. But that’s not really the case.
There’s two unfortunate truths to writing for publication:
- There’s approximately 645 billion stories out there, and even if only .1% of them are good, that leaves 645 million to compete with. Also, there’s a lot of really, really talented people writing and submitting.
- Most competitions don’t allow simultaneous or previously published work. Though my website is small, it still counts as being Published Online. Meaning if I put stuff up here I can’t submit it elsewhere.
So I haven’t been as active as I have in the past. With that in mind, I’ve done some things in the past four months that I’ll be sharing here soonish.
I wrote a Noir style short story that I think could turn into something longer. Maybe novel sized. I’ll be sharing it here soon in some form or another. Maybe as an old school Radio Drama, if I could get a few people interested in playing some parts.
I’ve wrote three or four more Solace pieces that I’ll be adding to the collection.
I’ve written loads of nonfiction. Most of it is on the personal side. I want to say that I’m trying to figure out how to share it, but really I’m just building up the gumption to post it.
So where does this leave us? The same place this post started, really. I’ll be posting again soon. If you’ve been following this website, thanks so much and I’m sorry I haven’t shared recently. If you haven’t, well, just carry on living your life, I suppose. I wont say that your life is meaningless without my writing, because that’d be rude and bordering narcissistic. And probably weird. Like I said, I won’t say it.
I’ll be dropping a post next week. See you all then!
